Hiya, I just got an email from somebody called Jane, and Jane says to me, "Nick, how do I cry in an acting audition?"

Now, the first thing to realise about crying in an acting audition is that that's not what they're looking for. They are not looking for your ability to cry. What they're looking for in any audition that you go in for is your ability to portray the character, to be the character.

Now, if that character cries as a result of the pressures that are happening on that person, you know, maybe they're struggling in some kind of internal way and the only response they have is tears, that's fine. But they're not looking for you just to be able to cry.

If you do that, you'll let yourself down. Don't do that.

Look at the scene, and if it says cry, try figure out why this person is feeling in that emotional state. What is their vulnerability?
