This is my arrangement of an Irish traditional jig said to have been composed by the East Clare fiddler, Paddy Canny, in DGDGCD tuning for the solo guitar. Sheet music will be available soon on SheetMusicPlus and the tracks from my forthcoming album will be available at crowyote.bandcamp.com This wonderful piece is predominantly in G minor, but contains a brief modulation to D Mixolydian and this tuning seems to be the perfect foil for realizing this jig’s intricacies.
DGDGCD tuning is also known as Gsus4, and yields harp-like arpeggios with stepwise movement on the upper strings. The intro which I’ve composed is an attempt to reveal the beauty of this tuning with it’s ringing open strings against fretted notes. I owe a debt of gratitude to Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus, and Jim Goodin who’ve illuminated the intricacies of DADGAD, and inspired me to explore similar sounds in this tuning.
I used an Effectrode LA-1A in the fx loop of the Warm Audio Wa-84’s Orange Acoustic Pre channel. I also used an Origin Effects Cali76-TXL in the effects loop of the pieze channel. The guitar is a New World Player Classical (Kenny Hill). The audio was processed with my iRig Pro Duo (I/O) nto the ShureMotiv Video app, with final editing in iMovie.
