Braiding is true art

I think about the days in Haiti, sitting under the sun with my grandma, just learning through touch. Watching, trying, braiding her silver hair, not knowing I was being taught a language that would stay with me.
Because braiding has never just been about hair.
It’s about care. It’s about connection. It’s about history being passed down quietly, moment by moment.
And it’s crazy, because the same thing that’s so sacred to us is something Black women have been shamed for, over and over again. Told our hair isn’t “professional,” isn’t “neat,” isn’t “acceptable.” And even now, that still affects how we see ourselves.
But every time we braid our hair, style it, wear it as it grows from our heads — we’re reclaiming something. We’re choosing to see the beauty that was always there.
That’s what Haitian Views Through the Glass House is about.
Moments like this. Culture, memory, identity, and the small things that carry so much meaning.
This Women’s History Month, I’m just thinking about the women who passed these traditions down, and how we get to carry them forward in our own way.
Our hair is more than hair. It’s legacy. 🤍
