Nestled in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, Aligarh is not just a historic city but also a haven for food enthusiasts. Join us on this evening food walk as we explore the bustling streets and some popular eateries that define the gastronomic landscape of this city. In this exploration, we are being guided by a group of students from Aligarh Muslim University which is led by Ayan and Mir.

Our adventure begins from Sheru Tea Stall, a beloved local haunt known for the iconic matri omelette - omelette stuffed between two matri breads. The matri, a quintessential bakery product from Aligarh, is somewhat a cross between a bun and a rusk. It has a crusty exterior and soft interior. The above dish is a favourite go to dish especially amongst the students and youngsters because it is tasty, pocket friendly and filling.

From there, we reached Haji Ji Doodh Wale for some hot milk. What drew our attention was the humongous kadai brimming with milk. It had a capacity of nearly 40 liters. The thoroughly boiled piping hot milk is served with a sprinkle of bura sugar and thick cream scooped out from the vessel itself. North Indian people love to have a glassful of milk before going to as it is believed to have a huge health benefit.

Our next stop was Kolkata Rolls where we tried a plain egg roll. Contrary to the name of the shop, this egg roll was different from the one found in Kolkata. Here the flatbread was shallow fried unlike that in Kolkata where it is pan fried. It was then stuffed with onion, two kinds of sauces and a spice mix. We liked the succulent and balanced taste of this egg roll.

Right next to the roll shop was the renowned non vegetarian eatery named Shan e Delhi, that serves Delhi famous non veg dishes. After a quick chat with the genial owner, we ordered tasla chicken, chicken kaju keema and mutton nihari. The rich and luxurious dishes loaded with ghee, spices and nuts had the soul of Delhi. Our favourite was the chicken kaju keema as it was both rich yet subtle.

After the greasy and delicious meal we reached a non descript shop near Jama Masjid selling two kinds of halwa - carrot and egg halwa. These are available only during the winter months. We opted for the egg or anda halwa as it is a rare thing on the streets. Due to the perfect measure of khoya and cardamom this halwa was nice to try though one can feel a slight eggy taste at the end.

After wandering through the busy streets we reached Md. Hussain Lassi Stall. What makes this place stand out is their thick lassi that is loaded with rabri, khoya and is served in a steel bowl. Yes you heard it right! Some call it pyala lassi. Drinking this thick concoction from a bowl was a different fun experience. That marked the end of this tour.
