Today, I painted the Jarovce Pheasantry – a place where time stands still. It is a protected area on the Slovak-Austrian border, a quiet island of floodplain forest surrounded by vast fields. This Baroque oasis has been shaped by history since the 1730s, when it served as a noble hunting ground. Even Joseph II, the son of Maria Theresa, once walked these woods.

The Subject
At the very heart of the pheasantry stands this stone Baroque bridge with two vaulted arches. It is the central motif of today's watercolor.

Technique and Atmosphere
In the painting, you can see how three centuries of history are slowly fading into nature's embrace. I used soft, earthy ochres and brownish tones to capture the forest's peaceful atmosphere.

The Details: The bridge is depicted in a state of gentle decay, overgrown with vegetation, which gives it an authentic character. Deep shadows stretch beneath the arches, contrasting with the soft, luminous background of bare treetops. They rise toward the sky like delicate lines, hinting at the end of winter or the coming of early spring.
