Impala of the Kruger National Park
In the Kruger Park there are approximately 10 000 impala herds with an average herd size of 11 animals. They have a marked preference for areas where there is a regular supply of water, short grass and dense thickets of shrubs and trees.
Impala are everywhere in the Kruger National Park! They are by far the most common animal and if you spend a little time in the park, you’re bound to come across this beautiful antelope. They can often be the first animal you see once you’ve started your safari.
According to Wikipedia
The impala is reddish-brown with white hair inside the ears, over each eye, and on the chin, upper throat, underparts and buttocks. A narrow black line runs along the middle of the lower back to the tail, and a vertical black stripe appears on the back of each thigh. Impalas have unique brush like tufts of black hair that cover a scent gland located just above the heel on each hind leg.
The impala can jump more than 10 meters distance and 3 meters high, and can reach running speeds of about 80 to 90 km/h, to escape from predators.
Impala rams form bachelor herds but become fiercely intolerant of each other during rutting season. During the rutting season, male impalas (Rams) leave their bachelor herds to establish their territories. This is a very tense time as the rams are very aggressive towards other males. To impress the ladies, males show off their strength, agility and overall health by jumping and leaping around. They also chase the females around, hoping to get their attention. Males are heard making a loud snorting and grunting noise that stems from their nasal cavity. The dominant male usually runs around chasing off other males but also herds his females using these sounds.
The mating season can be exhausting for rams as they fight off challengers, herding their “harem” of ewes and mating with them. Rams who are unsuccessful in securing a group of ewes to mate with usually retreat to a bachelor herd.
