Since 2019 the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences has partnered with the Stoke for Life Foundation to sponsor the US Open Adaptive Surfing Championships. The annual event takes place in beautiful Oceanside, California and brings in competitors from all over the world.
The Stoke for Life Foundation allows people with impairments such as spinal cord injuries, amputations, cerebral palsy, etc., to compete as professional surfers in adaptive surfing competitions all over the world.
In this short documentary we hear from the founder of Stoke for Life, Charles "Chaka" Webb, as well as several athletes, and USAHS students and faculty. Our students serve in a crucial role as volunteers helping the athletes in and out of the water and as part of a water safety team. Our students get hands on experience helping these inspiring competitors who are now competing at the highest level and doing the thing that they enjoy most.
