Rupture and Repair || several laptops were harmed in the making of this video.
Poem: written and performed by me
Song: "at the end of all things" by Scott Buckley (I made significant edits to his work, but it would have been impossible without him)
Special thanks to the staff at SLCC's Community Writing Center (CWC) who helped me through the many, many drafts of this poem.
"Rupture and Repair" is a real concept in psychology, although I want to recognize that this poem is strictly a work of art, and fiction, and in no way constitutes educational material on the topic.
This poem was born out of reading, artistic expression, and a soft-criticism of a newer sociological phenomenon I've seen online, in which people are encouraged to treat other people like trash bags; that is to say, thrown out when they aren't useful.
Near the end of the poem I include the phrase "you don't owe anyone anything." This is a reference to T.M. Scanlon's book "What We Owe to Each Other" a philosophical text on ethics.
It also happens to be a popular social philosophy on the internet.
