Eating Circles, is the ultimate destination if you want to have an authentic Karnataka style Thindi/Tiffin in Chennai. Though Chennai is dotted with Udupi style eateries, some of them dating back to 1930s, but they are more Tamil style catering dishes to suit the Tamil tastebuds. Getting a Neer Dosa, MangaloreBuns, Bonda Soup or Benne Dosa in Chennai used to be almost impossible until a few years ago. With the advent of Eating Circles, now Chennaiites can get a taste of Coastal Karnataka's vegetarian fare.
Tried only a few items which are signature at Eating Circles and each one is a gem and would bring some excitement and exuberance with each bite. Mysore Masala Dosa is on a different level with a mint chutney base and an enticing stuffing made with mashed potatoes and onions. Neer Dosa was at its best and it is one of the finest Neer Dosa from a vegetarian restaurant we have had in recent times. Among the accompaniments, the grated coconut with jaggery and a little drizzle of ghee was out of the world. Another exciting dish here is the Red Rice Dosa, which with its hard crispness and mild sweetness stole the show. Delighted to see such a dish on a restaurant menu. Rose milk is another interesting offering here, with the garnish of rose petals tasted heavenly. Undoubtedly this is the only place in Chennai, where you would get both Karnataka style and Tamilnadu style Sambar. Though the dishes are priced twice or thrice than the regular Darshini/Sagar style restaurants in Bangalore, but it is worth considering the quality, taste and the unparalleled Udupi experience they offer.
