Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) is another factor that helps us to regenerate and prevent bone loss, for example after an extraction or after cyst removal.

The PRGF is obtained from the patient’s own blood. Using a small amount, it is easy to obtain a platelet concentrate that is rich in growth factors, which are simply proteins that are capable of stimulating tissue growth.
As a result we can prepare areas where dental implants will be fitted at a later date.

Using this technique, we can also regenerate bone that has already been lost, for example in narrow jaws. When dental implants expose threads because of their thickness, we can cover them with PRGF together with other materials to create a thicker bone mass. We can also add height by filling in the paranasal sinuses with this material, mixed with bone substitutes (sinus lift), making it possible to fit dental implants in the rear of the upper jaw, an area that is often difficult to work with due to the low height of the bone, which is nearly always of poor quality.

The process begins with obtaining venous blood from the patient. The Plasma Rich in Growth Factors has a higher concentration of platelets than normal blood. These platelets are responsible for releasing growth factors that will promote tissue healing.

To obtain the plasma, the blood is centrifuged for a certain time and speed. Once the centrifugation is finished, 3 fractions in each tube will be obtained: Fraction 1, Fraction 2 and the Red Blood Cells fraction.

Then, Fraction 1 is extracted from each tube and placed in an empty tube. The same operation is performed, but now with Fraction 2. This Fraction 2, which is the richest in growth factors, can be used to moisturize the surface of the implant before its placement or to apply over a post-extraction socket and thus favor the healing.

To activate the coagulation, CaCl2 is added to the contents of each tube, and the contents are poured into two glass containers that are placed in a 37 °C heater. After a few minutes a fibrin clot with the growth factors will be obtained.

Activated Fraction 2 can be used to fill a post-extraction socket or to combine it with some type of bone graft for sinus elevations or bone augmentation. The growth factors are released and will promote the healing of hard and soft tissues.

Activated Fraction 1 has less growth factors than Fraction 2. It can be used to make fibrin membranes to cover the lateral window in a sinus elevation, or to as a membrane to cover biomaterials in cases of bone grafts.
