New Wright StreetDeck Electroliner EVs have entered service on route 98. These are temporary, and are meant for other routes. These are being used with Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 and 3 hybrids from 2012, 2014 and 2016.
New BYD eBus BD11s have been ordered for the 98. These will replace the hybrids and Electroliners in the future.
Route 98 runs from Willesden, Pound Lane to Holborn, Red Lion Square. The route serves Pound Lane, Willesden Bus Garage, Villiers Road, Willesden Green Library, Walm Lane, Sidmouth Road, Yates Court, Deerhurst Road, Christchurch, Plympton Avenue, Kingsley Road, Kingsgate Place, Quex Road, Kilburn High Road Station, Kilburn Park Road, Carlton Vale, Maida Vale Station, Hall Road, Sutherland Avenue, St John's Wood Road, Orchardson Street, Church Street Market, Edgware Road Station, Sussex Gardens, George Street, Edgware Road, Marble Arch Station, Selfridges, Oxford Circus Station, Great Titchfield Street, Tottenham Court Road Station, New Oxford Street, Museum Street, Bloomsbury Square and Red Lion Square.
Route 98 runs every 7 to 12 minutes. The route runs from 05:30 until 00:45. The 98 is 7 miles (11 km) long. A full journey on the route takes 40 to 70 minutes.
The 98 is operated by Metroline. The route runs from Willesden (AC) garage, located at the route's northern terminus. It has a peak vehicle requirement of 22 buses.
Route 98 started running in July 1992. The route replaced the withdrawn section of the 8 between Willesden Garage and Oxford Circus. It was initially operated by Metroline using AEC Routemasters. The Routemasters ran Mondays to Saturday daytimes. And MCW Metrobuses were used on Sundays and late evenings.
Leyland Nationals entered service in December 1993.
The 98 was then retained by Metroline in December 1998 and December 2003.
In March 2004, the 98 was converted to low floor one person operation. The Routemasters being replaced by new Plaxton Presidents.
In December 2010, the route was retained by Metroline.
Between June and October 2014, the 98 was temorarily changed. The route terminated at Russell Square at these times.
In June 2015, new Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LHs were introduced alongside the existing Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.
New BYD K8SRs were introduced alongside the existing Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LHs and Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 25 June 2016, the route was restored to serving Holborn instead of Russell Square.
On 9 December 2017, the route was retained by Metroline and was converted to full Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LH and BYD K8SR operation.
In October 2019, the route was converted to a full Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LH operation.
On 7 December 2024, the route was retained by Metroline. At the same time, the PVR decreased from 25 to 22.
On 1 February 2025, part of the allocation was transferred to Harrow Weald (HD) garage.
On 17 March 2025, existing Wright StreetDeck Electroliner EVs were introduced alongside existing Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LHs.
Route 98 connects to several rail lines, including... The London Overground Lioness line at Kilburn High Road, The London Underground Bakerloo line at Maida Vale, The London Underground Bakerloo line at Edgware Road, The London Underground District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines at Edgware Road, The London Underground Central line at Marble Arch, The London Underground Central and Jubilee lines at Bond Street, The Elizabeth Line at Bond Street, The London Underground Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines at Oxford Circus, The London Underground Central and Northern line at Tottenham Court Road, The Elizabeth Line at Tottenham Court Road, And the London Underground Central and Piccadilly lines at Holborn.
