A tugboat sank and spilt oil in the Amazon River on March 15, 2023. The incident occurred in Itacoatiara (269 kilometres from Manaus)
According to the company Terminal Fluvial do Brasil, the vessel WALDOMIRO LUSTOZA III was being supplied with 43,000 litres of fuel when, around 2:40 pm, it began to sink. As a result, a significant amount of the fuel was dumped into the river.
Footage from the recording shows the boat slowly sinking and the crew jumping from the vessel as it sinks. Despite the accident, there were no injuries.
The river navigation company Waldemiro P. Lustoza informs that, in partnership with the inspection and control bodies, it has already taken all necessary measures, including opening an investigation to determine the facts and responsibilities for what happened.
