Maria Bello's Battle With Bipolar Disorder - Italian American Actress. She is best known for playing Anna Del Amico in the medical drama ER and Jacqueline "Jack" Sloane in the police procedural drama NCIS, but she has also faced drama in her personal life, including a recent divorce. In 1995 at 28 years old Bello was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition characterized mainly by extreme mood shifts. She views her medicated illness almost as a gift, triggering a deep empathy. She experienced extreme highs and lows of human emotion due to the condition. She used her bipolar experience to portray characters, like in the American supernatural horror film "Lights Out" in 2016. The role involved portraying a depressed, and delusional mother. She drew on her own experiences of being unable to get out of bed for months. Bello sought to understand distorted realities through her personal experience. She discussed her disorder in her 2016 memoir, "Whatever… Love Is Love". The book was inspired by a pivotal moment when Bello told her then 12-year-old son, Jack, that she had fallen in love with her female best friend. After being engaged for five years to Chef Dominique Crenn they married in April 2024. Unfortunately, they divorced after just one year due to irreconcilable differences. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, affects millions of adults and sadly sometimes goes undiagnosed. Bello's openness aims to de-stigmatize mental health conditions for others.
