Rep. Jason Crow just dismantled Pete Hegseth using his own counterinsurgency
manual — and Hegseth admitted on the record: ""I can't.""
During a congressional hearing, Crow — a fellow Army infantry officer,
platoon leader, and counterinsurgency veteran — walked Secretary of Defense
Pete Hegseth through the exact military doctrine Hegseth himself once taught
and co-authored during his time as a senior counterinsurgency instructor in
Afghanistan (2011–2012).
The exchange began on common ground: both men agreed on unit cohesion,
political neutrality in the ranks, and the foundational principle that
distinguishing American forces from adversaries is not just moral — it's
strategic. Hegseth's own training manual stated it plainly: ""If you have
killed two innocents, you have set yourself back more than you have moved
forward.""
But when Crow asked Hegseth to reconcile that doctrine with his recent public
statements — which appeared to draw equivalence between the U.S. military and
terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda and ISIS — Hegseth evaded, deflected,
and only confirmed ""of course we are different"" after repeated pressure.
Then came the final question: can you reconcile what you once taught with what
you're saying now?
Hegseth's answer: ""I can't.""
The exchange exposes a profound crisis of military leadership and raises urgent
questions about the politicization of the U.S. armed forces under the current
Secretary of Defense.
