"Pretend"

Pretend that time was different,
An hour would last a day,
That day could last forever -
Would that it were this way,
For in this hour we’d stay.

We’d cast in time eternal
Those things we had and lost,
Those dreams we gave our hearts to,
The coin to fate we tossed,
And never knew the cost.

Tomorrow pay the piper,
Today we will pretend -
One summertime ripe fruit was mine,
But hours are glass and do not bend.
They break, and summertime will end.
