Описание: In 1915, amid military defeats and political collapse, the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War in a state of profound crisis. Having already lost most of its European territories, the empire faced growing instability. Nationalist ideology gained influence among the ruling elite, intensifying internal divisions and suspicions toward minority populations.

The Armenian community, established in Eastern Anatolia for millennia, was increasingly portrayed as an internal enemy. Between April 1915 and July 1916, more than one million Armenians were deported, massacred, or died during forced marches through the Syrian desert. These events are widely recognized by many historians as the first genocide of the twentieth century — a century marked by repeated episodes of mass violence.

For decades in the modern Turkey, public discussion of the events of 1915 was heavily restricted, and the term “genocide” remained highly controversial and politically sensitive. Yet in recent years, voices from within Turkish society have begun to confront this painful history.

This documentary brings together two individuals whose family histories stand on opposite sides of the tragedy: Hasan Cemal, a Turkish journalist and grandson of one of the leading figures associated with the events, and Fethiye Çetin, a Turkish-Armenian lawyer and granddaughter of a survivor. Through personal testimony and historical reflection, they explore memory, responsibility, and the urgent need for truth and dialogue.

By examining both the historical record and contemporary debates, the film sheds light on one of the darkest chapters of the early twentieth century — and on the continuing struggle over how it is remembered.
