Interlaken In Switzerland 🇨🇭is the vibrant, bustling heart of the Bernese Oberland. Its name literally translates to "between lakes," as it sits on a flat alluvial plain nestled perfectly between the emerald waters of Lake Thun and the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, with the Aare River flowing right through the town.
While Grindelwald is a classic alpine mountain village, Interlaken is more of a resort town and the ultimate basecamp for exploring the Jungfrau Region.
Here is what you can expect when visiting Interlaken, especially during the spring season:
🌷 The Vibe & Weather in Spring
Because Interlaken sits at a lower elevation (about 566 meters / 1,850 feet) than Grindelwald, spring arrives here a bit earlier.
Early Spring (March - April): The snow in the town is usually gone by March. The weather is crisp, with daytime highs around 10°C to 14°C. The surrounding trees begin to bud, and the Höhematte (the massive green park in the center of town) starts turning vibrant green.
Late Spring (May): Temperatures comfortably reach 18°C to 20°C. The lake waters, fed by the mountain snowmelt, are freezing cold but visually stunning.
🪂 Top Things to Do in & Around Interlaken
Paragliding over the Alps: Interlaken is known as the "Adventure Capital of Europe." On any given day—especially crisp spring mornings—you will see dozens of colorful paragliders floating down from Beatenberg to land right in the center of town at the Höhematte park.
Go Up to Harder Kulm: Known as the "Top of Interlaken," this is the local mountain. A quick funicular ride takes you up to a viewing platform with a spectacular vantage point looking down at both lakes and straight across to the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. (Note: The funicular usually reopens from its winter break in mid-April).
Cruise the Lakes: Taking a historic paddle steamer or modern passenger ship on the lakes is a must.
Lake Brienz: Famous for its striking, milky-turquoise color.
Lake Thun: Lined with historic castles (like Oberhofen and Spiez) and vineyards. Boat schedules ramp up significantly starting in April.
Explore St. Beatus Caves: Located just outside of town on the shores of Lake Thun, this massive cave system features stalactites, stalagmites, and roaring subterranean waterfalls that are especially powerful in the spring due to snowmelt.
Stroll the Höheweg: This is the main promenade connecting Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost (the two train stations). It’s lined with grand historic hotels (like the Victoria-Jungfrau), boutique shops, watchmakers, and cafes.
🚂 Interlaken as a "Hub" vs. "Destination"
The biggest thing to know about Interlaken is its role as a transportation hub. Because it has such incredible train connections (Interlaken Ost station), many travelers use it as their home base.
The Pros of staying in Interlaken: You have a massive variety of restaurants, larger grocery stores, and nightlife. If the weather is bad up in the mountains, you have easy access to valley activities, museums in Bern, or lake tours.
The Cons: You aren't waking up inside the high alpine peaks like you would in Grindelwald, Wengen, or Mürren. You have to take a 30 to 40-minute train ride into the valleys to get to the dramatic mountain bases.
