The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely regarded as the first true automobile. It was developed by the German engineer Karl Benz and was patented on January 29, 1886, under the name "Patent-Motorwagen." The vehicle was a three-wheeled, self-propelled car, powered by a single-cylinder, four-stroke internal combustion engine. The engine produced 0.75 horsepower (0.55 kW), and the vehicle could reach a top speed of approximately 10-12 km/h (6-7.5 mph).
Key features of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen include:
Single-cylinder engine: A 954cc engine that was revolutionary for its time.
Chassis: A lightweight, tubular steel frame that housed the engine and other mechanical components.
Control: It had a basic steering tiller and a belt-driven transmission system.
The Motorwagen was an innovative design that laid the groundwork for modern automobiles, despite its limitations in speed, power, and practicality.
This is a replica of the Motorwagen, developed by students of Gedee Technical Institute, Coimbatore.
