Milton Nascimento (Rio de Janeiro, October 26, 1942) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter. He is considered one of the icons of Brazilian music. Nascimento was born in Rio de Janeiro. His mother was Maria do Carmo Nascimento. When he was only a few months old, the boy was adopted by the family where his mother had previously worked; married couple Josino Brito Campos (a banker, math teacher and electrical engineer) and Lília Silva Campos (a music teacher). He lived in the Laranjeiras and Tijuca neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. When he was 18 months old, his biological mother died and he went with his adoptive parents to the town of Três Pontas, Minas Gerais. Early in his career, Nascimento played in two samba groups, Evolussamba and Sambacana. In 1963 he moved to Belo Horizonte, and his friendship with the Borges brothers led to the Clube da Esquina (“corner club”). The other members were Beto Guedes, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso and Flávio Venturini. Nascimento is famous for his falsetto and pitch, as well as songs such as “Canção da América” (Song of America) and “Coração de Estudante” (The Heart of a Student). The lyrics of “Coração de Estudante” recall the funeral of the student Edson Luís, who was killed by a policeman during the military dictatorship in 1968.
The song became the anthem for the campaign of diretas já in 1984. It was also played at the funeral of President Tancredo Neves the following year, who died before he could take office. The international breakthrough for Nascimento came with his collaboration with jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter on the album Native Dancer (1974).
This led to collaborations with such stars as Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, James Taylor and Pat Metheny. Through his friendship with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, an album recording with pop-rock band Duran Duran (1993) came about. Nascimento wrote and sang in Portuguese the song “Breath After Breath” on the Duran Duran album. He also joined the band on tour in Brazil to promote the album. Nascimento received a Grammy Award in the “Best World Music Album” category in 1998 for his album “Nascimento,” and was also nominated in 1991 and 1995.
