Can you really grow food in Illinois in November? In this winter gardening update, I’m taking you through the hoop houses to see what survived the recent 20-degree freeze. We’re checking on the Brassicas, taking a gamble on late-season peas, and inspecting the carrots and turnips for a potential Christmas harvest.
But it’s not all good news—the comfrey mulch kept the soil warm, but it also invited some unwanted guests. I'll show you the vole damage we're dealing with and how I plan to stop them without using poisons. Plus, we are moving inside to start a new experiment in the grow room. Can we grow lettuce and carrots indoors under lights? Let's find out.
In this video:
Real-time update: How broccoli, cabbage, and peas handle Zone 6b temperature swings (70°F to 20°F!).
Pest Control: Why mulching attracted voles and mice, and my plan to get rid of them.
Indoor Gardening: My setup for growing leafy greens and "container carrots" indoors during winter.
