Crossing creeks is a common occurrence in western mountain hunting, and in this video Randy Newberg explains a few simple practices to keep safe while crossing creeks and streams.
When carrying heavy packs, a misstep can be costly to one's safety. Hit your head resulting in unconsciousness, break an arm or dislocate a shoulder, and getting out of a fast flowing creek with a heavy pack is very hard, at times impossible.
When crossing by yourself, make sure you use trekking poles or some other stabilization device. When crossing with a partner always cross with a partner downstream from where you are crossing. Once the first person is across they should walk downstream to be the safety net for the next person crossing. This insures that if something happens to the person crossing, someone is down stream and can help the other person out of the water and back to the bank.
