Alcohol can damage the heart 🫀 muscle cells in a number of ways. One way is through the production of acetaldehyde, a toxic substance that is created when alcohol is broken down in the liver. Acetaldehyde can damage the heart muscle cells directly, and it can also make it harder for the cells to get the oxygen and nutrients they need.
Alcohol can also deplete the body of vitamin B1, which helps the heart muscle cells function properly and prevents arrhythmias. In deficiency of vitamin B1, the heart muscle cells can become damaged and weakened.
In addition, alcohol can cause the body to lose electrolytes, such as potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. Electrolytes are essential for heart health, and their deficiency can lead to arrhythmias and heart failure.
When the heart muscle cells are damaged, they become weaker and less able to contract. This can lead to heart failure, a condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Heart failure can cause a number of symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and feet.
