The math changed. The war didn't.

Days after Trump personally attended a Dover Air Force Base dignified transfer for four fallen soldiers, telling reporters "I had a very sad day yesterday... That's 18," the Pentagon's own casualty database quietly recalculated the toll down to 14 killed. Wounded figures dropped too, from 482 to 420 in a single day.

The four names removed from the official tally: Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas. 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, Queens. Sgt. Michael Swinton, 30, of North Carolina.

The reason traces straight back to the law. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 gives a president 60 days of unauthorized combat, plus 30 to withdraw, before Congress has to authorize it or the fighting has to stop. That clock started in late February. Officials told the New York Times the four soldiers were dropped from the count because their deaths came after Trump's April ceasefire, treating the resumed fighting since July 7 as effectively a new, separate conflict, one with its own clock. The Pentagon has created a new "Overseas Operations" category starting July 7 to track it.

Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican who lost his primary in May after Trump backed his opponent, called it out directly: "The Pentagon is pretending there have been two Iran wars separated by a brief cease-fire," he wrote, adding that by fighting more than 90 days without congressional authorization, Hegseth "IS BREAKING THE LAW and must be held accountable."

Massie helped push a War Powers resolution through the House 214-208 to strip Trump's authority to keep fighting without Congress's sign-off. The Senate's version failed 49-47.

A Pentagon spokesman said the department remains "committed to ensuring the utmost accuracy of all casualty reporting" and called the discrepancy a non-story. As of Monday, the official figures stood at 14 killed and just over 400 wounded, even as the president continues to publicly cite 18.
