An Experimental Romanian–American–Canadian Musical Project
A musical journey that bridges cultures, histories, and landscapes.
A celebration of heritage and innovation, connecting the stories of shepherds and flocks, mountains and plains with modern musical expression—Old Europe and the New World, sheep and bison, tradition and imagination. With special thanks to Rafiluca, whose beautiful voice brought this song to lifeand to the bison and sheep herders: Ron, Jeff, and Mihai.
Before borders, before nations, there were herds and shepherds.
Sheep and shepherding may be among the oldest, most mythical, and most beautiful human callings. Within them lives the story of life itself—of humanity’s long walk through time, of history in its purest form.
Perhaps nowhere does this story belong more naturally than along the crests of the Carpathian Mountains, where, from ancient times, a people of shepherds was born. The early history of the Vlachs is a history of pastoral life: long roads, mountains and flocks, the sound of the flute, and the open sky.
Just as Romania was and remains an ideal land for lambs with their “golden wool,” so Yellowstone is the ideal homeland of the world’s bison. Once, the Carpathians were home to what may have been the largest populations of bison in Europe, but they were lost. The same fate befell the great bison herds of North America.
The difference is that here, a return was possible. People understood, protected, and repaired what had been broken. Today, there are even bison herders—men and women who have chosen this calling and who love the animal they care for.
This song seeks to symbolically unite the sheep flocks of the Carpathians with the bison herds of Yellowstone and its surrounding lands. It is a call across mountains and continents,a call to continue pastoral life, and to fill both Romania and America once again with sheep and with bison.
At its heart, the song tells the story of a shepherd and his little lamb, perhaps the oldest folk tale of all, preserved in more than 900 folkloric versions by the people of the Carpathians. The story of Miorița is a story of absolute loyalty, the loyalty of the sheep to its master, the shepherd and of accepting the destiny of life and death with calm, clarity, and grace.
