Today’s pie was from the Collinsville Bakery. Collinsville’s a small town about 100 km west of Bowen. I rocked up around lunchtime on Monday and thought I’d treat myself to a pie. No steak and mushroom, no pepper steak — butter chicken was on offer, but I wasn’t keen. So I went with a cheese and bacon, and grabbed Sara a cottage pie.
My pie was firm on the bottom and sides, reasonably well joined, a few gaps, and a slightly flaky top. The base was different — shortcrust, crunchy, not bad. The mince was thick and tasty enough, not runny, but not heavy on gravy. Halfway through I finally found two bits of cheese, but the bacon was nowhere to be found. All up, not a bad mince pie, but calling it cheese and bacon is a stretch.
Sara’s cottage pie had a mashed potato top instead of pastry. It held together well, but the potato was hard and the filling had no taste — uninspiring and nondescript were her words.
