Lashkar-e-Taiba’s senior leader Qari Yaqoob Sheikh has openly praised Asim Munir’s elevation as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Sheikh, a UN-designated terrorist and close aide of Hafiz Saeed, is seen in a viral video declaring that the LeT is willing to fight arm-in-arm with the Pakistan Army if Afghanistan does not stop what he calls “anti-Pakistan activities”.

The video has resurfaced long-standing questions about Pakistan’s links with terror groups, especially as Munir consolidates unprecedented military power.

Asim Munir rose rapidly through Pakistan’s military hierarchy. In May 2025, after the ceasefire with India, Munir promoted himself to Field Marshal, becoming only the second person in Pakistan’s history to hold the rank. Months later, in November 2025, the 27th Constitutional Amendment created the new CDF post, and President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Munir for a five-year term. His first statement as CDF contained direct threats to India, saying Pakistan’s response to any aggression would be “even more swift and intense”.
