Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a common outpatient treatment used to remove abnormal or precancerous cells from the cervix. It’s especially helpful when a Pap smear or colposcopy shows signs of cervical dysplasia, which could lead to cervical cancer if left untreated.
⚡ How It Works
A thin wire loop is heated with an electric current
The loop is used to cut away abnormal tissue from the cervix
The removed tissue is sent to a lab for further analysis
🎯 Why It's Done
To treat precancerous cervical cells
To diagnose or remove genital warts, polyps, or other growths
To prevent progression to cervical cancer
🛠️ What to Expect During the Procedure
Done in a clinic or doctor’s office
Local anesthesia is used to numb the cervix
Takes about 10–20 minutes
You may feel mild cramping or pressure
⏳ Recovery & Aftercare
Mild cramping and spotting for a few days
Avoid tampons, vaginal creams, and intercourse for 4 weeks
No strenuous activity or heavy lifting during recovery
Full healing takes 4–6 weeks
⚠️ Risks & Considerations
Infection or bleeding
Cervical scarring, which may affect fertility or pregnancy
Slight increase in risk of preterm birth in future pregnancies
