STORYLINE:
A massive blaze was seen in southern Tehran as Israel said it conducted strikes over the Iranian capital.

While the fire appeared to originate from Tehran's oil refinery, Iran's oil ministry said in a statement the refinery was "fully intact" and continued to operate normally.

Iran and Israel were trading rounds of strikes in the latest salvo since a surprise attack aimed at decimating Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.

Iran launched a second round of missiles against Israel while Israel’s military kept up attacks in Iran following earlier strikes that targeted nuclear and military sites and killed key leaders in the country’s governing theocracy.

Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, and U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that Tehran was not actively pursuing the bomb.

Both Israel’s military and Iran state television announced the latest round of Iranian missiles as explosions were heard near midnight, while the Israeli security cabinet met.

Officials said the latest U.S.-Iran talks will not take place amid continued fighting.

Israel's ongoing strikes across Iran have left the country's surviving leadership with the difficult decision of whether to plunge deeper into conflict with Israel’s more powerful forces or seek a diplomatic route.
