Shinigami, the God of Death, drops a notebook in the human world and a weary genius, Light Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara), picks it up. Light decides to create an ideal world and begins to hold the scales to judge the criminals in his discretion. The shinigami Ryuk, who is the original owner of Light’s Death Note, becomes his companion on this vigilante quest.
Meanwhile, the International Criminal Police Organization engages a mysterious detective called “L” (Kenichi Matsuyama) to investigate the series of sudden deaths of criminals. Under the pseudonym “Kira”, Light cleverly manipulates the Death Note to shake off the police, and so begins the battle of wits between him and L.
