Phetchaburi lies around 120km southwest of Bangkok and is one of the oldest settlements in Thailand, mentioned in historical records dating to the 8th century. It's location as being the first major city on the way to the southern islands makes it a good stopping off point after leaving Bangkok. In 1860, King Rama IV built a palace here on top of a 92-meter high hill commonly known as Khao Wang, but its official name is Phra Nakhon Khiri. Next to the palace the king built a tower for his astronomical observations while on another adjoining hill sits the royal temple of Wat Phra Kaeo. All of these can be visited by taking a cable car. Other sites in the city include Wat Mahathat Worawihan that is believed to date back to the 10th/11th centuries; the most southern Khmer Temple in Thailand and oldest structure in town (dating from the late 12th century) called Wat Kamphaeng Laeng; a whole host of other temples that are located below Phra Nakhon Khiri; plus some very nice caves to the north known as Tham Khao Luang.
