It has been said Rowing is Not the Sport of Kings.
Yet in this film we see a connection between Prince Philip, Prince Charles, John Fairfax and Yacht Designer Uffa Fox.
'In 1969, John Fairfax became the first person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. He achieved this feat in his boat, the Britannia, setting off from the Canary Islands and arriving in Florida 180 days later. His accomplishment was recognized by the Apollo 11 crew, who had just landed on the moon.
'Britannia' was designed by Uffa Fox who had also designed the wartime air sea rescue airborne lifeboats and built in Cowes, Isle of Wight, at Lallows boatyard.
Uffa Fox also sailed and taught Prince Philip and Prince Charles to sail.
In 2008 John Fairfax's Britannia was returned to The Isle of Wight and is now on show at The Classic Boat Museum .
