The use of fascist imagery and aesthetics in modern media is often complicated - but generally speaking, it can be an effective tool from both a filmic and ideological perspective. Very often, though, visual references to fascism fall short of this mark. In this video I look at a scene from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, focusing on General Hux and his speech on Starkiller Base to the First Order, as well as the depiction of Theseus in Russell T. Davies’ 2016 adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the BBC - and attempt to establish what makes one of these work and what makes the other fail.
