For me one of the best parts about working on a rear loader is this getting full stage, because it means you get to take a break on the way to the dump. On top of that it's also awesome watching the packer and cylinders powering into the material, along with hearing the awesome sound of the engine as the overload of pressure affects the pump.
On these old Compaction Systems bodies there weren't any pressure sensors, so you had to cut power to the packer or reverse the mechanism yourself (which was quite inconvenient). This is why you had to be very careful with this equipment to avoid blowing a cylinder or rupturing a hose - it was ideal to stop it as soon as the engine tone changed to that deep groan. The heat produced during this area of operation is pretty full-on too, just watch the steam in the last clip when there are pressure overloads!
These are very hard packers, you can squash a fair bit of material in just the tailgate... they were mean machines on these vegetation runs =]
