Pope Francis has missed this year's Good Friday procession in Rome, as he recovers from double pneumonia.
Thousands of Catholics gathered at the Colosseum, taking turns holding the cross of his crucifixion to walk in and around the ancient Roman arena.
The Vatican said the 88-year-old has personally written the meditations for this year's ceremony.
It's not known whether the Pope will attend other Easter services this weekend.
