This restored Universal Newsreel footage documents one of America's most devastating aviation disasters - the crash of American Airlines Flight 1 on March 1, 1962. Taking off from New York's Idlewild Airport (now JFK) bound for Los Angeles, the Boeing 707 jetliner climbed to approximately 700 feet before banking left, then suddenly nosing down and plunging vertically into Jamaica Bay, creating a water spout that reached 200 feet high.
The tragedy claimed all 95 souls aboard and occurred just hours before astronaut John Glenn's triumphant arrival in New York. At the time, it was the deadliest single-plane disaster in U.S. aviation history, second only to the 1960 mid-air collision over Brooklyn that killed 134 people.
The newsreel shows the recovery efforts, including skin divers searching the muddy bottom for victims. Despite clear weather conditions with unlimited visibility, the cause remained a mystery, with investigators hoping the flight recorder would provide answers to this catastrophic accident that occurred mere minutes after takeoff.
