Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) wrote the suite Le Bal de Béatrice d'Este in 1905 for orchestral winds and percussion, two harps, and a piano. He recorded it in 1935 with an anonymous Parisian ensemble.
The scene is a ball given by Beatrice Countess of Bari and Milan, a noted beauty whose husband Ludovico - 'Il Moro' - was a significant patron of the arts, most notably of Leonardo da Vinci. Beatrice's sister Isabella is one candidate for the beauty behind the Mona Lisa.
Beatrice did not enjoy a long life: she died in childbirth at 21.
