Indiana’s 2026 legislative session is well underway and now the state’s largest teacher’s union is outlining its priorities to lawmakers.
The Indiana State Teachers Association wants to focus on educator and student safety, classroom conditions, fair compensation, strengthening public school funding and fully elected school boards.
Public school funding is a big one. It means addressing schools’ concerns from last year’s property tax reform. A survey done by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education, published last month, shows schools facing growing budget shortfalls that are forcing districts to make painful cuts, including to support and teaching staff.
