(1 May 2018) Scattered vandalism marked May Day in France as thousands of demonstrators marched across Paris to oppose economic policies pursued by President Emmanuel Macron.
Skirmishes broke out between police and protesters near Place de la Bastille involving a fair amount of tear gas.
Small groups of police holding shields tried to clear the area of protesters, who were not masked or organised, but who were jeering the police to leave.
Police say about 20-thousand demonstrators took part in often angry demonstrations that authorities tried to disperse.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo joined political figures condemning violence during the May Day protests in the French capital that she blamed on "hundreds of masked individuals."
