How I Shoot My YouTube Overhead Camera Shots & A Sony ZV-1 In Product Showcase Mode - Equipment Used
Just a simple video showing how I go about filming my overhead shots for my YouTube videos. While this video has been done specifically for one of my YouTube buddies, Jon, Lensman Online / lensman2online the video may also be useful for others who are wanting to film overhead shots for their YouTube videos, also sometimes called top down shots.
This way of filming is something that I call a rostrum shot, although I use that term in a very broad sense. While a rostrum rig will usually consist of a very specific camera rigging for varying and fixing the height of the camera and usually a movable and articulating base or platform for the filming subject that can be articulated and moved into many positions. This top down or overhead shooting can also be seen as a very simple rostrum shot.
Rostrum filming is also used for stop motion animation and a whole bunch of other shooting with stills cameras and many other shooting scenarios such as product shots, time lapse etc. and can also be very effective for particular types of lighting.
For this demonstration I've also used my Sony ZV-1 in its Product Showcase Mode. While I will use the ZV-1 for a whole bunch of other stuff I think for these top down video shots it's going to be awesome because of its super fast auto focus.
If you have ever wondered how to shoot an unboxing video and while there are many ways to film a product unboxing video. This overhead shooting that I'm doing in this video is a really good way and not too difficult and it doesn't have to be expensive either.
You don't even need to use the exact equipment that I'm using and if you use my equipment and rigging setup as a guide or starting block, you can put together something very similar that wont cost a lot of money but will help to give your shots a more professional look.

I do review products available on Amazon but these are products that I’ve either bought myself or products sent to me for free or on loan to be reviewed specifically for my YouTube channel.
I always mention at the start of any videos if I’ve received any of the products being reviewed for free or on loan.
Other than technical input that may be useful to the viewer, I never accept any input from anyone who sends me products for my reviews.
I always try to be fair and balanced with my reviews but will always make it very clear if I find any issues with any products that I use or review.
