PCOD or PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Disease/Syndrome) is a very common condition among teenage girls and women in their twenties or thirties. Dr Astha Dayal, a well-known gynecologist answers some common questions about PCOD:
What is the cause of PCOS?
What are the symptoms of PCOS?
How can I treat PCOS?
Can PCOS be cured?
Symptoms of PCOS:-
Delayed periods
Scanty bleeding during periods
Weight gain
Hair growth on chin, breast, and belly button
Hair loss from scalp
Acne
Risk factors of PCOS:-
Family history
Diabetes
Obesity
Lack of physical activity
Frequent consumption of fast food
Treatment options available for PCOS:-
There is no permanent treatment option for PCOD. However, it can be controlled with modifications in lifestyle and taking medications. That said, when you stop taking the prescribed medications, the symptoms may prevail again. Hence, doctors only treat the problems that prevail at that point of time. For example, hormonal tablets are prescribed in case of delay in periods and weight gain is generally treated by insulin sensitizers such as metformin. Similarly, problems like acne and hair growth problems are generally treated using anti-testosterone tablets and so on.
The best way to curb this problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place. This can be done by taking certain preventive measures, as listed below:
Follow a good diet: low in refined carbohydrates such as sugar, maida. In addition, avoid junk food.
Regular exercise: 30 minutes of vigorous exercise or 45 minutes of moderate exercise 3 times a week is the minimum you should do.
Lower down your stress levels. Do meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques.
PCOD may need proper treatment if you're trying to get pregnant because people suffering from PCOD have chances of having difficulties with ovulation (release of egg). In such times, you need to be extra careful and take medications properly.
