Alexander Malavich was diagnosed with Leukemia when he was just three years old.
Andrea Malavich (Alexander’s mom) “It’s devastating news as a parent. The worst you can probably hear at that moment”
College lacrosse player Rachel Vargas also received some devastating news. She was diagnosed with sarcoma.
Rachel Vargas, 20, Sarcoma patient “My Mom… (Without knowing), she emailed the general email for Cincinnati Children’s and within the hour my main doctor now …”He called my mom, and was like can she come up tomorrow? We want to see her tomorrow.”
Both of their families looked to experts at Cincinnati Children’s to provide world-class care at the new Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute just north of Cincinnati in suburban Liberty Township.
Rachel - “The Liberty Campus is right next to a new mall. The Liberty Campus parking is really accessible. It takes 5 minutes to walk out”
The Liberty campus brings a new level of specialized pediatric care to one of Greater Cincinnati’s fastest-growing regions.
Andrea -“The first time I walked out for rounds, I saw a huge team of people, I was a little overwhelmed to be honest, I realized, that whole team, truly, every single person works as a team to provide the best care for my child and that’s the way we feel when we are here", “For us, it was no question we are staying with Liberty.”
Andrea- “We had two days before Christmas was going to be here, do you remember what you said to Mommy, we were leaving the hospital and you looked out your window and said “I sure am going to miss this place”
In addition to being a home away from home, families here get the best of both worlds: the same doctors and medical care team at a convenient location.
Rachel “We found out it’s the same exact nurses, you’re not going to a completely different hospital where they have completely different doctors. All the attending’s they switch out. I’ve seen my doctor here more than 10 times.”
Andrea - “It’s that friendly face and it’s that genuine care.” And it is truly genuine and you truly feel that when you are here. You don’t feel like, oh this is just their job and they are just showing up to work, they truly care.”
All of that care and comfort are making a difference. Rachel is doing well, and getting back to her active lifestyle.
Rachel -“Probably getting back to running was my big milestone, “I had my entire lung removed, so being able to start running again was a big milestone.”
Nurse: "One, two, three."
Alex is also nearing the end of his 3 years of treatments.
Andrea “There’s no question in my mind that we did make the right choice …“couldn’t ask for better care.”
Rachel- “A lot of nurses had a huge impact on me … “I’m actually going back to school to study nursing so I can be an oncology nurse so one day I can you know, tell someone I have been there and I know how you are feeling and I can relate to them in that way.”
Andrea - “When your going through such a devastating journey, to have people that lift you up, and that truly care for you, there's no better feeling”
