23 Feb 2026, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's newly- appointed Chief of Defence force General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman graced the Russian Armed Forces Day today, hosted by Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Malaysia H.E Naiyl Latypov and wife Marina Latypova, at an evening gala reception at the JW Marriot KL.
Among the 300 distinguished guests were Russian Defence Attache Captain (Navy) Victor A. Shkulepa, and wife Yulia Shkulepa, Ambassadors, members of the military Attache corps, representatives of the command of branches of Malaysian Armed Forces, executives of the Ministry of Defence of Malaysia, government officials and corporate figures.
Shkulepa, in his speech, expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence for their role in fostering robust military-technical ties with Russia. Shkulepa said that Russia was ready to extend more fruitful cooperation with Malaysia, especially the Royal Malaysian Air Force in beefing up its air superiority and defence capabilities.
Latypov committed Russia's large participation in the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition and conference on April 20-24 at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, and the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2027 exhibition.
"We hope to further explore avenues for cooperation to be further productive, that will strengthen our bilateral relations. Defence cooperation is an important element and we share a long and cordial history that will pave a brighter future for both nations," Latypov said.
At the reception, students and staff of the Russian school and cultural centre put on a dazzling displace of dances and singings while embassy staff assembled a musical band that kept the evening vibrantly alive.
Every year, on 23 February, Russia celebrates its Armed Forces Day or popularly known as Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia, which commemorates the founding of the Red Army in 1918. On this day in 1918, fighters of the 2nd Red Army Corps engaged advancing German troops moving toward Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg).
It honors military personnel (active and veterans) and has traditionally become a day to celebrate all men, including those who have not served in the military.
Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan also celebrate this auspicious day with Russia.
