Tea's Quality Control is Serious Business!
Henry P Thomson's storage warehouse is a 100,000 square foot tornado and flood proof building located in Augusta, Georgia. It has the capacity to store up to six million pounds of tea if necessary and the capability to blend up to 40,000 pounds of tea per day. The modern facility features narrow aisle racking to maximize storage capacity and Tyco monitoring for intrusion & fire protection. The warehouse is certified by the American Institute of Bakeries.
Our responsibility is to provide customers with food products that have been handled in the best possible manner. Our warehouse team follows Good Manufacturing Practices or GMPs to assure compliance of government food safety regulations and requirements.
The inspection process involves a thorough monthly physical examination of the interior and exterior facility grounds to assess the positive and negative conditions that effect food safety. The inspection allows us to record recommendations as evidence of an effective development and implementation of the food safety program. It ensures our customers that high levels of safety and quality have been achieved and will be maintained in order to meet or exceed our customer and regulatory requirements.
To assess the food safety risk in our facility, we based our observations on the five A.I.B. International Consolidated Standards of Inspection categories. These include operational methods and personnel practices, maintenance for food safety, cleaning, integrated pest management, and adequacy of prerequisite and food safety programs.
When the tea enters the warehouse, it is examined by two inspectors to insure that it meets the highest standards. Our blending line features multiple safety checkpoints such as screens to filter debris, magnets to pick up small pieces of metal, and filters to remove dust. Since we have the ability to manage and monitor our customer's tea program and essentially monitor the tea from "bush to bag," we have the ability to customize and create as many different tea blends as possible for our clients using three types of blenders: The V-blender, the ribbon blender, and the tumble drum.
The V-blender excels at blending dry materials. It cuts whole leaf specialty teas for institutional or retail sales and gently tumbles the leaf, allowing its integrity to remain intact. The ribbon blender is used for flavored tea bag grade blending, while the tumble drum is used to mix general tea bag blends.
After the tea blend is created, it is customized to the customer's specifications and repackaged in multi- ply Kraft paper foil lined sacks, or custom sized cartons. All of our bags and pallets are certified by the U.S. Tea Association. Once the orders are loaded on the truck and ready for shipment, they are examined by a team of inspectors and the shipment is locked with a numbered trucking container seal to prevent contamination.
