When the sea gets blocked… the land becomes the new lifeline.
Amid rising tensions, Iran is exploring a strategic shift, moving oil and goods through a land-based rail corridor connecting to China.
The route passes through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, linking Iran to China’s Xinjiang region via an existing Eurasian rail network.
Unlike sea routes, which are vulnerable to blockades near the Strait of Hormuz, this land corridor cannot be directly controlled by naval forces. It’s also faster: deliveries that take 35–40 days by sea could arrive in just 12–15 days by rail.
But it’s not perfect, rail capacity is limited, infrastructure is vulnerable, and technical issues like gauge differences slow things down. Still, in a conflict scenario, even an imperfect route can become a strategic advantage.
The big question is: Who will global businesses listen to?
