Audie Murphy is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of World War II. This video tells the true story of his legendary stand at Holtzwihr, France, where a single American soldier stopped a massive German counterattack during the Battle of the Colmar Pocket in January 1945.
Despite being outnumbered by German tanks and infantry, Audie Murphy, then a second lieutenant with the 3rd Infantry Division, ordered his men to withdraw and held the position alone. Using a burning M10 tank destroyer and a .50-caliber machine gun, he fought for nearly an hour while directing artillery fire, ultimately forcing the enemy to retreat.
For his actions at Holtzwihr , Murphy received the Medal of Honor, becoming the most decorated American soldier of World War II. This documentary also explores his life beyond the battlefield — from his struggles with PTSD to his later career as a Hollywood actor and advocate for veterans’ mental health.
Rather than focusing on dramatization, this video presents the historical facts behind Audie Murphy’s courage and why his legacy continues to define what true bravery means.
