Professor Christopher Baker is Director of the Faiths and Civil Society Unit, at Goldsmiths University of London. In this interview with Divinity PhD student Reem Fatthelbab, he discusses the role of faith and interfaith in public life.
Policymakers make a mistake when they inhibit those motivated by faith-and-belief from expressing themselves in the policy formation process, Baker argues. Baker also explains why he his helped establish the Faith & Belief Policy Collective, naming William Temple (Archbishop of Canterbury 1942–1944) as his inspiration for a faith-inspired vision for the welfare of all.
Baker also speaks about the value of getting past the politics of representation to ensure fast action on priority issues such as climate change.
This conversation was recorded during UK Inter Faith Week 2024, which coincided with the opening of COP29.
