The quay walls in the port of Hamburg play an important role. Here the ships dock for loading and unloading. Many forces act on them in the process: the tidal range of the Elbe, the cranes and the increasing size of the ships. Quay walls are therefore giant structures, comparable to a 12-14-storey high-rise building, whereby most of the structure is under water and cannot be seen by the observer.
There are about 43 kilometres of quay walls in the port of Hamburg, many of which are over 100 years old. These are always maintained by the Hamburg Port Authority and still fulfil their purpose excellently. Nevertheless, over the years, the structure has been continuously developed. You will see the most diverse quay walls in this PORT IS WHAT WE DO-series.
