This summer 1942 UFA German newsreel is presented in Spanish, presumably so that it could be shown to audiences in Franco's fascist Spain. (Note: another portion appears to be Die Deutsche Wochenschau newsreel marked 618 / 549.) The film describes several military operations and strategic movements during World War II in North Africa. It begins with a coastal operation, where a submarine is attacked with depth charges, causing significant damage. Special underwater photography is used to document the event. A victorious submarine returns to the North Atlantic, having sunk 52,000 tons of enemy ships in under a month. Meanwhile, Rommel inspects positions in North Africa, takes a break to recover from the harsh conditions, and interrogates captured British generals. Rommel, alongside General Field Marshal Kesselring, plans further operations against the defeated British forces. The Axis forces break through the British defenses at the Libyan-Egyptian border and advance eastward, capturing key fortresses and continuing their push across the Halfaya Pass. Despite strong resistance, the German-Italian Panzer Army successfully forces the British to retreat and captures Marsa Matruh, a crucial strategic location. The battle results in the destruction of British batteries, the downing of tanks, and the capture of thousands of British soldiers. The film concludes by mentioning the involvement of African auxiliary troops supporting the British and the challenging conditions they endure on African soil, emphasizing the strategic significance of these operations.
00:00: Starts with a description of a coastal operation, where an alarm is raised, and efforts are made to protect against the enemy. A submarine is targeted with depth charges, causing an explosion that damages the vessel and creates a flood.
2:10 - 2:33: Underwater photographs are taken with special equipment, highlighting the efforts to document the situation.
2:36 - 3:22: A victorious submarine returns to the North Atlantic. The damage to the enemy is reported, including the destruction of ships with a total of 52,000 tons sunk, achieved in less than a month.
3:26 - 4:10: Rommel inspects positions in North Africa, where after enduring the harsh conditions of the advance, he takes a refreshing bath in the Mediterranean. He then interrogates captured English generals.
4:35 - 5:12: Rommel meets with General Field Marshal Kesselring, whose air force support helped the success of Rommel’s tank army. Together, they plan the next operations against the defeated British forces.
5:12 - 6:00: Rommel moves to join his troops, who have started pursuing the enemy. The enemy's resistance at the Libyan-Egyptian border is broken, and the forces advance toward the east.
6:00 - 6:47: The Axis forces capture key fortresses such as Capuzzo, Solum, and Hal. The advance continues across the Halfaya Pass, defeating the British forces and forcing them to retreat.
7:30 - 8:12: German and Italian artillery destroy British tanks and infantry. Despite heavy resistance from British reinforcements, the Axis forces break through.
8:12 - 9:00: The German-Italian Panzer Army breaks through the British main positions and moves toward the large coastal road. The capture of Marsa Matruh in Egypt is a significant achievement, as it is a critical station on the coastal railway and a strategic point for further operations.
9:00 - 9:19: The Battle of Marsa Matruh leads to the destruction of numerous British batteries, the downing of 36 tanks, and the capture of over 6,000 British soldiers.
9:30 - 10:12: The newsreel concludes with mention of the involvement of African auxiliary troops supporting the British forces and the harsh conditions they face on African soil, underscoring the struggles and strategic importance of these operations.
During the Battle of Mersa Matruh in June 1942, German forces (part of the Axis) successfully captured the fortified port of Mersa Matruh, a base for British and Commonwealth forces, after defeating the Eighth Army at the Battle of Gazala, and later recaptured by Allied forces following the Second Battle of El Alamein in November 1942.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
