Yiquan War Dance (Jianwu & 健舞) by Master Yao Zongxun’s Disciple, Mr. Cui Ruibin.

Master Yao Zongxun (1917-1985), was one of most important successor and excellent disciples of Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai. He trained Yiquan under Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai in 1937. He came to fame in the 1940s with great conscientiousness and hard training in Yiquan after training for only three short years. He gained great favor with Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai at the time. He was granted the name of “Jixiang” in 1941 by Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai with the great expectation that he would promote this art in the future.

This impressive War Dance performance is an improvisational display of the many stances and techniques Mr. Cui Ruibin has acquired throughout his years of training. (a classic Yiquan free style form).

The War Dance (Jianwu & 健舞) is an advanced freestyle Yiquan performance. It contains all the Yiquan techniques and fighting experience of the practitioner. It is a union of all basic techniques and combat. Through this dance that the Yiquan spirit, force and technique are completely expressed. During the performance, every part of the body is in complete harmony with the flexible footwork, body movement and the artistic transformation of the hands in motion. The external and the internal become one in the same during the dance with a high spirit. This Yiquan War Dance is uncommon and not a literal dance but the beauty of a well trained Yiquan practioner's performance. It’s moving like a dragon, motionless like a mountain and relaxed like a floating cloud, yet energized like thunder.

The practice of the War Dance will condition every part of your body to have explosive power and excellent flexibility. It looks very much like a dance but actually contains the deep meaning and functionality of martial arts.The dance is a sublimation from a fighting system to an art form. It is actually an outcome of all techniques combined into a dance form. Behind this impromptu dance form there is in fact a basic principle and technique of martial arts. If there was no Yiquan principle or technique, the dance would be nothing other than a pointless routine without a genuine purpose.

At the top level of the Yiquan War Dance, intention and power become one: Earth, Heaven and Man (the practitioner) become one. This is called the harmony of man and nature. It is performed with a potential enemy in mind, so it is carried out with impromptu fighting forms. The dance is the spirit, intention, power and all techniques combined to create a graceful, robust beautiful art form.

Shifu Changrong Ph.D. is a 34th Generation Master of the Shaolin Temple, a 5th Generation Baguazhang, a 6th Generation Xingyiquan, and a 6th Generation Yang style Taichi. He is also a rare descendant of the legendary masters Zhao Daoxin (趙道新先師), Wu Yihui(吳翼輝先師), and Wang Xiangzhai (王薌斋先師).
