Program Notes:
Trioism had a challenging journey to life. Composed in 2017 for a reed trio that disbanded while I was composing it, the piece remained on my hard drive for nine years before being performed in 2026 at a recital given by bassoonist Rick Barrantes Agüero at Temple University. It was a long wait to hear such a short piece; and when Rick said, “We LOVE this piece!” it was a sweet moment. Trioism waited a long time to be known!
The piece is cast in three movements filled with idiomatic wind writing, each a character piece with melodic dancing throughout. I wanted to make Trioism fun and whimsical; miniatures that hang together on their own terms, not needing to be anything other than what they are. There was no need to make the movements more or less of any of the musical elements; they simply sing. I tried to give each instrument time to shine, while always accompanying, supporting, and kindly encouraging each other. The title Trioism is borrowed from a great album by drummer Paul Motian. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
Recorded by Tom Spiker.at Rock Hall, Temple University, Philadelphia.
I've written a bit for the winds over the years. Here are some score-follow videos if you'd like to peruse.
